Planting Trees

Planting Trees for Schools

With the help of local schools, Ashanti Development has been responsible for planting around 8,000 saplings over the last few years.  Each child within three years of finishing school is given a seedling to look after – they must build a fence to protect it and water it.

Small Incentives, Big impact

If by the end of the school term the seedling is still alive the child will be rewarded with a tiny prize, a pencil perhaps or a T shirt.  After three years, the child leaves school and the tree doesn’t need any more special treatment.

Planting with Purpose

Most of the trees we plant are teak, which grow back from the roots if they are burned or cut down.  We plant them near schools, who have the right to harvest and sell the wood when times are hard.
