Community Outreach Health Screening
Ashanti Development works closely with the Ghana Health Service to conduct community outreach health education and screening exercises. These joint efforts have been proven feasible, effective and well accepted by the local population and to provide valuable insights into local health needs.Â
Screening focus on infectious diseases such as TB, HIV and tropical skin diseases, however the non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes are becoming a growing significant challenge.Â
Diabetes
Diabetes is becoming an increasing concern in our area, District statistics show it accounts for around 2% of deaths. Conditions like hypertension and high cholesterol often follow, creating a serious health burden for individuals and families.
We regularly meet people who tell us they suffer from diabetes, despite being eligible for free treatment under the Ghanaian embryonic national health system if they only asked.Â
Providing Local Clinics with Testing Equipment
Reaching people across 200 villages and small bush hamlets makes mass screening for diabetes difficult.
As an alternative, Ashanti Development is fundraising to provide testing equipment – glucometers and strips – to every local clinic. This means that people can be tested every time they visit the clinics for whatever cause, and while they wait the nurses can talk to them about symptoms and treatment.
Detect Diabetes Early
Help us equip rural clinics with glucometers and test strips. It costs just £144 for a single clinic to supply a glucometer, testing strips, and delivery to even the most remote locations.
